Christmas Decorating: Part 2

How do you usually celebrate December 12th? What? You don’t? Well, here is a reason to celebrate from now on. Years ago, Congress designated December 12th as National Poinsettia Day in honor of Joel Roberts Poinsett (1799-1851), US ambassador to Mexico. Who knew?
In 1826, Poinset traveled in Mexico, and became fascinated with a plant that grew on the side of the road. He brought it home to South Carolina and grew them in his green house. This plant, euphorbia pulcherrima, or "very beautiful,” became popular as a Christmas flower in the 1830’s. Thank heavens the name didn’t stick, and it became known as "Painted leaf" , "Mexican fire plant", and finally the Poinsettia- after the ambassador.
In the United States, the poinsettia symbolizes Christmas, Jesus Christ’s birth and crucifixion. But, to most people, it’s just a pretty red leafed plant that is part of the Christmas decorating.
There are a few things to remember when purchasing and caring for your poinsettias this Christmas. First, make sure your plant is wrapped in cellophane or some other protective covering when you buy it. This will ensure that it isn’t exposed to the cold air during transport from the store to your car, and from the car to your home. In addition, avoid poinsettias that are displayed near the doors of a store. You don’t want them nipped by the cold before you even get them out of the cart.
Once you get your plants home, remove the cellophane and find a place which is away from both extreme heat and cold drafts. Make sure that your poinsettias are not under or over watered. The best way to determine if your plant needs water is to pick up the pot. If it feels heavy, do not add more water. On the other hand, if it feels quite light, and the soil feels dry, give it a drink.

Christmas Decorating Part 1

So, now that you’ve had your fill of turkey until next year, and you’ve sworn off leftovers and all creative ways of disguising yams, are you ready to switch gears? It’s time to put away those fall decorations, and pull out the ones for Christmas. But, before you do, you might be interested in some inexpensive ideas from Flowers On main.

First, don’t throw away that autumn centerpiece that graced the table at your Thanksgiving feast. With a few minor alterations, it will remain attractive through December.
If you missed out on the decorating class held during a recent Flowers On Main holiday open house, you’ll want to know an easy way to perform this centerpiece makeover. Holly, co-owner and floral designer, demonstrated this magic trick.
To create the fall centerpiece, Holly taught how to add autumn leaves, either silk, or preserved leaves you can purchase, to evergreen beaus which were arranged in oasis. You know- the green foam stuff you can buy at the craft store, soak in water, and then use as a base in flower arranging? Well, this oasis can be placed into a dish or container that you already have at home.
Next,
Place a tall, thin orange or yellow candle right into the middle of the arrangement. Just stick it down into the oasis until it can stand up on its own. Of course, she showed how adding fresh or silk flowers in the earth tones of fall also adds a nice touch.
Now for the makeover: If you have a centerpiece made with evergreens, just replace the fall leaves and flowers with glass Christmas bulbs, or other small ornaments. A tall green or red candle can be used instead of the previous orange or yellow one. Small red berries, or pine cones can add dimension and texture as well.
Voila! You now have a new creation to add to your Christmas décor. You will want to ensure that the oasis is kept wet so that the greens don’t dry out. This will extend the life of your centerpiece.

Care for Flowers?

Isn’t it fun to receive flowers? The bell rings, and upon answering the door, you find a friendly delivery driver holding a gorgeous, artistic flower arrangement from Flowers On Main. Your day got instantly better.
After reading the card, you look for the perfect place to display your new bouquet of color, but, where to put it?
Did you know that keeping your vase of art away from heat will help your flowers last longer? Do not put them near a heater vent, on top of an appliance that gets warm such as a television or in direct sunlight during hot summer months. This will slow down the growth of bacteria in the water, and the high quality blooms from Flowers On Main will brighten your home even longer.
What else can you do to care for your flowers? You’ll want to change the water in the vase when you see it become cloudy. Each time you do this, cut the stems on the diagonal with a sharp knife. This will allow the flowers to drink the water more easily. It’s better to use a knife rather than scissors so that the end of the stem isn’t pinched closed. Also, if you receive a beautiful Flowers On Main wrapped bouquet, strip away any foliage that may be submerged when placing the blooms in water.
Now, you may be asking, “Do I need to put something in the water to keep it fresh?” Good question. The best thing to put into the water is the professional preservative which comes with every Flowers On Main masterpiece. If you run out of this, just keep the water clean. You can also add one tsp. of bleach to every one quart of water to kill bacteria. Contrary to popular belief, adding aspirin, Sprite, or sugar does not help preserve your flowers, and is unnecessary.
